Here again, we have the dark-haired, slender-but-muscular butch and the blonde, slight-but-steely femme (is that a Law of Lesbian Romance that nobody told me about?), inexplicably drawn to each other but separated by their pasts and an uncertain future. When the family is the source of pain, we tend to blame ourselves instead of an evil social system, and many of us try to exorcise the pain with alcohol, drugs, overeating, and even violence against ourselves or other people.

In doing so, he draws on a wide array of published and archival sources to assert that the American advisors "invented" South Vietnam's post- 1954 institutions and infrastructure - essentially building a nation where none existed before. According to the author, by the time of the Tet Offensive in January 1968, the nation-building campaign in southern Vietnam had completely failed.
