Cuba enjoys both domestic self-reliance and international exchange. Although the US-imposed embargo has initially led to a 40% drop in the Cuban economy, the country regained balance after loosening certain economic controls and renewing links to global capital market, even adopting the US dollar as legal currency. The embargo has provided Cuba a chance to democratize its political system and preserve social programs such as public health care services.
