Musical composer George Rochberg, who turns 80 in Jul 1998, revolutionized music when he abandoned strict serialism and aleatoric composition and forged a contemporary musical language that could transcend despair and mark him as an artistic original. Rochberg emigrated to the US in 1912 or 1913 and is the son of Ukrainian Jews. His "Concord Quartets," which were applauded by Leonard Bernstein, mark the beginning of his revolution.
