Will OPEC survive?

The OPEC was formed in 1960 by oil-producing countries to manage the abundance of oil in the market and stabilize oil prices. However, efforts of leading oil producers such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait failed to prevent several countries from price gouging. This led to the 1986 oil price crash, an event which likewise failed to curtail the illegal practices of some oil producers. OPEC must find a way to unite all its members to secure its role in the global petroleum market.

Climate policy: showdown in Berlin.

The Conference of the Parties to the Rio Climate treaty concluded with successful results, with the world's two great powers, the US and China, agreeing to a mandate that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A number of developing countries also pledged their support to the mandate. They claimed that the smaller states in the Asia-Pacific region strongly support any move that will eliminate the threat of climate change. A Third Conference of the Parties in Japan had been scheduled in 1997.
