The IRS has altered the procedures under which a change in accounting method may be permitted in Revenue Procedure 92-20. Under the terms of the procedure, the taxpayer must file form 3115 within 180 days of the first of the tax year they wish to affect. Taxpayers using improper accounting methods, which will be defined at a future date, and taxpayers notified of an audit are special cases that are treated specifically by the procedure.
