Robert O'Hara is a frequent visitor to Fitchburg Public Library, but not because of his reading habits.

On a recent afternoon he sat alone at a large wooden table working on the Internet with his laptop computer. A thin power cord connected the computer to a wall outlet, but his high-speed Web connection was wireless.

"It's a very convenient service," said Mr. O'Hara, a freelance Web programmer. "It's almost like a remote office, in a way."
