51 years ago, love bloomed between Drs. Bob Holzberg and Bette at a summer camp in the Poconos. They were respectively, the Boy's and Girl's Head Counselors at the time. They continued their romance after camp closed, and were married one year later on July 7, 1957 at Tavern-on-the-Green in Manhattan, N.Y.
Bob began his career as a Special Education teacher in the NYC schools. He received his Doctorate from New York University and then became an Asst. Professor at Lehman College, NYC where he taught in the graduate school. During this time, he was appointed by Mayor Frank Garito to the New Rochelle Board of Education and served as a board member for five years. Bob then was recruited by the state of South Carolina to head up the Multiply - Handicapped Program at the State Facility in South Carolina. He and a co-worker had two books published by Charles Thomas, Publishers during that time, which are being used with teachers of Special Education in Graduate Schools throughout the country. He was a well known speaker on the subject of Special Education and was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1978 by Governor Julian Carroll. Bob was then recruited by Chicago State University and he retired from that institution as Professor Emeritus in 1989.Drs. Bob and Bette Holzberg 50th Wedding Anniversary
