"I moved back to Oakland from the suburbs in May," wrote Chauncey Bailey in the spring of 2002. "A day later, a young Black man was killed on my street - in the 7900 block of Bancroft. Over the next several months, two more persons were killed on this block - one of the deadliest streets in Oakland. A few blocks away, not far from St. Benedict's Catholic Church, another block has seen just as much blood. Three victims in three months."

Detroiters and some former Detroiters such as I remember Bailey's encounters with Mayor Coleman Young. And if a reporter was willing to take on the combative mayor, then no one in the city was safe. This was Bailey's attitude throughout his 13 years at the News, where he was a reporter and columnist.

City Councilman Larry Reid called Bailey's killing "a loss to the entire African-American community."
