"I moved back to Oakland from the suburbs in May," wrote Chauncey Bailey in the spring of 2002. "A day later, a young Black man was killed on my street - in the 7900 block of Bancroft. Over the next several months, two more persons were killed on this block - one of the deadliest streets in Oakland. A few blocks away, not far from St. Benedict's Catholic Church, another block has seen just as much blood. Three victims in three months."
