Tuesday's closing of the New Harmony bridge for safety reasons underscored a point state Rep. Trent Van Haaften, D-Evansville, said he has made before - such a closure might be necessary to finally persuade people to find funding for a permanent fix.

"When it is working, you take it for granted," he said. "Now that it is not going to be available, people won't take it for granted anymore."
