While the medical malpractice insurance debate has focused on high-profile, high-risk health care providers such as obstetricians, another often-overlooked group also is paying an increasingly steep price to practice - physicians who work in nursing homes.

Maryland has roughly 250 long-term care facilities staffed by some 500 physicians. During the last five years, their insurance premiums have gone up as much as 500 percent.
