A Senate budget panel on Wednesday took a giant step toward freezing judges' salaries next year, a cost-saving effort that has the judiciary's consent during these trying economic times.
The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee's action could forestall the state Judicial Compensation Commission's recommendation of a $9,111 raise for each of Maryland's active judges next fiscal year, which begins July 1.Maryland Senate Panel Mulls Freezing Judges' Pay
The amount represents a 6 percent increase to the average judicial salary and is part of a four-year package of similar increases each year through fiscal 2013.
