Long Island's housing leaders say the region's lack of affordable housing must be addressed with a combination of targeted subsidies and increases in housing development densities.

Gathering for the Long Island Regional Planning Board's monthly meeting Tuesday in Hauppauge, government and not-for-profit housing officials agreed that government subsidies to decrease housing development costs and to assist would-be homebuyers with down payments should be focused on key downtown areas.
