Embattled Whitman police Chief John Schnyer has taken an "extended vacation" with the town's blessing, paving the way for his ouster over allegations he had a sexual relationship with a minor three decades ago.

Several sources told the Herald yesterday that Schnyer, 58, will likely retire rather than face an investigation by town officials that could result in his firing.
