Companies Still Struggle with Workers' Comp

The relatively high cost of workers' compensation insurance premiums in Vermont will soon drop for the first time in many years, especially for some small businesses and for employers with workers in high-risk jobs.

But the lower rates, scheduled to take effect next month (April), will probably not provide enough relief to silence complaints about the system's negative impact on Vermont companies' competitiveness.

State Senator Kevin Mullen, a Rutland County Republican, says the payout for workers' compensation coverage contributes significantly to what he views as the already burdensome cumulative cost of doing business in Vermont.
