DES MOINES, Iowa -- EMC Insurance Group Inc. (Nasdaq:EMCI):

--GAAP Combined Ratio - 84.1%

EMC Insurance Group Inc. (Nasdaq:EMCI) today reported record first quarter operating income of $1.32 per share for the first quarter ended March 31, 2006 compared to operating income of $0.74 per share for the first quarter of 2005(1). Net income, including realized investment gains/losses, was $19,264,000 ($1.41 per share) for the first quarter of 2006 compared to $10,503,000 ($0.77 per share) for the first quarter of 2005.
