Five years after a fire Rhode Island rock concert killed 10 people and injured more than 200, the legal and regulatory impacts are still being felt. The fire has spawned a lawsuit involving some 300 plaintiffs and 90 defendants, including band members, club owners, Anehuser-Busch, Home Depot, the town of West Warwick and the state of Rhode Island. Settlements have exceeded $70 million since last year, when the realty company that owned the building, a pyrotechnic manufacturer, a sound proofing company and an alarm company settled for a total of $13.5 million. Despite the lawsuits, courtroom acrimony will not be the sole legacy of The Station tragedy. It has prompted an overdue re-evaluation of fire safety regulations nationwide.
