A Gem of a Lunch Buddy

Vancouver jeweler Steve Runyan first met author Patrick McManus more than 20 years ago on a sandy beach in Mexico.

"My wife had wanted to go to Mexico on vacation and I finally said I'd go," said Runyan, who is now retired. "We went to the beach and sat down and she handed this book to me and said, 'Read it.' "

Just a few pages into that book, McManus' "A Fine and Pleasant Misery," Runyan was laughing loud enough to attract glances from other sunbathers on the beach.
