Summary


The body of his work consti-tutes arguably the largest and most complete photographic documentation of a minority community in the United States. The late Clarence Rolla Turner, a sociologist and historian of Black history, said [Charles Harris Jr.]' work constitutes "one of the most complete chronolo-gies of a black community in the United States."

Joyce Baucum, a fiber artist and AWC staff member, con-curs. "I like black and white photography and how it cap-tures. (Harris) pictures are like a running commentary of Pittsburgh's Black commu-nity."

In celebration of Harris's 100th birthday, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture will display a portion of the Harris photo-graph collection at Gallery 209/9 through July 12, 2008. The photographs on display will be from "LOOKING FOR-WARD" and "Rhapsody in Black and White."
