Economists say it's hard to get a handle on the amount of money spent by tourists and the impact of tourism on the economy - say, in West Virginia, the United States or around the world.

But one thing's for sure: Owners and keepers of hotels, restaurants and stores look to the tourist dollar, which packs a punch in consumer spending even when it comes from the occasional visitor on a shopping spree or tour.
