The National Hockey League fight that never should have been fought, one that inflicted incalculable losses to all involved, finally ended yesterday, 301 days after it began.
Shortly after noon in New York, after their 44th meeting since the 2004-05 season was officially declared dead Feb. 16 - at the end of a final negotiation that lasted some 24 hours - the league and the NHL Players Association announced an agreement in principle on a new six-year collective bargaining agreement.Hockey; Nhl, Union Find Key; 6-Year Deal Brings End to Lockout
All that remains before the formal scheduling of the 2005-06 season, and all its attendant advance chores, is the official ratification of the deal by the board of governors and the NHLPA rank and file. Those votes are expected to take place by next week.
