In addition to his role as a Tuskegee Airman, Hipps was one of 101 officers arrested in 1945 for attempting to integrate officer's clubs at Indiana's Freeman Field.
Even with the payroll deductions from both his job as a bus driver - where he met his wife, Willie, as she boarded a bus after leaving her job at Montgomery Ward's - and at Holsum Bread Company, Hipps couldn't figure out why he owed so much in taxes. His investigation led him to pursue a career as a certified public accountant, [Denise Hipps-Glenn] said. Hipps was one of the first 100 Black CPAs and initially worked out of the basement of the family's South Side home. He later opened Hipps Financial Service, Inc., on South Calumet Avenue.An only child raised by his mother and grandmother, Hipps was a dedicated, hard worker who felt like there wasn't anything he couldn't do, said Hipps-Glenn.Homegoing: Edward V. Edward V. Hipps, 84, a World War II navigator with the Tuskegee Airmen, died Monday at Advocate Trinity Hospital after a brief illness.
