Jen Toomey went from a local club runner to a national champion after discovering that going all out applies to training as well as racing.
The Salem resident and 1994 Tufts graduate reaped the benefits of both by winning the women's 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 0.2 seconds during yesterday's USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Toomey underwent a transformation in both her routine and philosophy when, at age 31, she ventured under the coaching umbrella of Tom McDermott.
