"Congresswoman [Yvette Clarke] is resting comfortably after having surgery last Monday for uterine fibroids. As you know, this is a condition which disproportionately affects women of an African background," Chic Smith, Communication Director for the lawmaker, confirmed to The Weekly Gleaner on Wednesday.

There had been much conjecture about the nature of the lawmaker's medical condition after the congresswoman's office released a terse statement late Friday saying that Ms. Clarke would be taking a medical leave as a "necessary proactive measure," without further elaborating.
