When asked about other issues deemed important but thorny, [Erik Fleming] told the Defender that "all those other issues such as abortion rights and gay rights, those are secondary...Those are the four issues that are major in Mississippi."

His interest in politics started with a set of encyclopedias in his home. Each volume that he picked up had something about a president. "I thought it was cool to see the pictures of the presidents," Fleming told the Defender. He then began to read more about the presidents and the other political offices.
