[Mark Calla]'s direction is a great example of staying out of the way and letting the words do their job. Which is not to downgrade his efforts, but he's made sure all that all of his work has served the playwright. Art DeConciliis and Dale Irvin are [George] and [Lennie], respectively, and what's most satisfying about their performances is the very real bond they create on stage -- we understand, of course, what Lennie gets out of the deal, but DeConciliis and Irvin make us see how the relationship benefits George as well.
