"The only thing I worry about is that we lose the tax revenue," [Richard M. Daley] told reporters after the vote. "We're competing against suburban growth. (Sales tax) can't all be on Michigan Avenue."

"I hope in the final analysis, we can find a way to get over it. These companies will get richer, unions still won't give us jobs in our communities and the poor will still be at the bottom of the economic ladder," said Smith, who also chairs the council's Black Caucus. "We have an obligation to the people in the community. If it goes to court, so be it."

"Of course I think people should get paid, but I have to look at the fact that in my community we have to struggle to make sure Black men and women work," [Dorothy Tillman] said. "Why not make it broader so every body can benefit. It is very unfair and very unconstitutional to pass an ordinance they know is illegal."
