When a group of Terminal Annex postal workers brought their proposal to read the works of African American authors and learn the true history of Africans in the Americas to Mrs. Vassie Davis Wright, she scheduled an organizing meeting and Our Authors Study Club (OASC) was formed on February 14, 1945. After the group organized, Mrs. Wright recommended that the group affiliate with Dr. Woodson's organization then known as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, himself, chartered Our Authors Study Club as the Los Angeles Branch of ASNLH in June 1945. OASC incorporated as a California non-profit organization in 1946.
Today, Our Authors Study Club, Inc. continues its original mission and now offers programs that include a literacy program for elementary school children; awards cash prizes to high school students that compete in an annual Oratorical Contest; provides scholarships to students attending college and to persons pursuing a PhJD. degree in subjects that documents African American contributions and accomplishments.Our Authors Study Club, Inc.
