"We need to find a way to hold the students' interest. They're being taught like I was and that bores today's kids," he said. "I'd like to follow what Tiger Woods and Bill Gates are doing with technology. They're getting a lot more kids going to college. I'd love that."

"We wouldn't have a problem with hiring them, the problem is finding them and getting them here," he said. "Colleges down South (like Clemson) training minority teachers have deals designed to keep them in state. We're looking at some kind of incentive program to attract them; cars, housing, the same kind of thing we do for our police."

"This is a big deal," she said. "We've never had an African-American in that position before. I think we'll see great things from Mr. [Ocie Paige]."
