Certified public accountants
An analysis of the potential impact of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' new mandate requiring 150 semester hours of tax education for students of accountancy, as viewed by job recruiters, is presented. It revealed that a majority of the job recruiters in South Dakota approved the additional hours of tax education for new accounting graduates. Moreover, many recruiters showed preference for two tax courses as well as optional courses in tax research.CPA firm recruiters' views of the tax curriculum as it relates to the 150 hour requirement.
In 1988 the membership of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) overwhelmingly voted to require that all new members of the AICPA have 150 semester hours of education including a bachelor's degree effective January 1, 2000. Presently, thirty states have enacted legislation requiring 150 hours of education for their CPA candidates. The 150 hour law was enacted in South Dakota--to take effect on January 1, 1998.
