Summary


To help CPAs and their clients and employers solve the complex privacy issues they face, the AICPA and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants have joined to make available the Privacy Framework. As a multinational manufacturer of durable medical equipment, Sunrise Medical Inc. conducts business around the world. Consequently, it became imperative for the company to create policies ensuring that all divisions across the world proactively comply with a global range of applicable privacy laws. Sunrise Medical broke the compliance effort down into a series of projects. After three months of heavy analysis, the framework for Sunrise Medical's global policy began to take shape, and when the Privacy Framework was finished, it was more than 100 pages long. KLS Consulting helped the company use the Privacy Framework to develop one single, company-wide privacy policy that all divisions across the globe could follow. The most profound lesson was that in privacy laws across the globe, one rule remains the same: Privacy information is licensed.
