The space shuttle Discovery, like shuttles before it, has been on a collision course with thousands of pieces of space junk ranging in size from a softball to a city bus.

Making sure it's able to navigate the metal-ridden reaches of space unscathed is the job of Air Force Space Command, based in Colorado Springs.
