Although her songs are oddly distinct, she has something to say in each, whether it's bashing big corporations, fairy tales or aerosol cheese. "There's a message in each song," Swift said. "I hope {listeners} feel hopeful and invigorated because of my music. That should be the point of any art: It should make you think differently and feel excited about life."
Swift's message-making music is reflective of indie phenom Ani DiFranco's folk style. Both of their material is strongly political and their progressive sound is eerily similar. Surprisingly, it was Joni Mitchell who had the greatest impact on the formation of her music over the last 20 years.
