For all those who lived through hard times before us, especially those who struggled through the Great Depression. For the responsibility that falls to those of us who knew them to share their wisdom and insight with a new generation facing tough times. For the opportunity this gives us to reconsider our priorities and to lead in quiet ways. For the certainty that once something has been done, it can be done again -- this is the spirit that tells us we can do this, we will do this, and it will be a little easier because it's been done before.

In particular this year, I must express my profound gratitude for the medical care my son received for a congenital condition diagnosed last spring. Setting aside the burden of the cost -- a struggle we all face -- he walks and runs today without pain thanks to the surgeon who rebuilt his ankle. I am humbled by the simple blessing of being able to see a good doctor. Although I gripe about many things regarding our health care system, I cannot close this year without acknowledging how fortunate I am to be able to provide this for my child, and how sobered I am at the thought of parents who cannot.
