During the Vermonters' short visit to our 50th state, Print Studio 250 instructor Te Selle taught a waterless lithography workshop. The Vermonters and their Hawaiian counterparts shared "in this new learning experience and their respective cultures, as ocean breezes passed through the studio at Holualoa" according to a curatorial statement posted at the entrance to the exhibition. Te Selle is a realist who produces crisp, fine-lined works. His pieces in this show include tropical plant studies rendered with an anatomical precision that seems to blend art and science.

The steam locomotive in Sokol's large woodcut "Future" seems to be rushing forward, as if trying to escape the picture plane. Steep angles propel the image, and wood-grain textures remain visible. His lithograph "View from Clair's Lanai" is more placid. The lush island vista features boats in the bay and craggy volcanic mountains in the distance.

Beyond the art itself, this show begs the question: How did these artists score their island sojourn? To fund the Hawaiian trips, Burlington City Arts received a $5500 "donor-directed grant" that was passed through the Vermont Community Foundation. According to Brian Byrnes, the foundation's President and CEO, "That grant was given to City Arts to support the arts in Vermont. City Arts could use this grant for any project, at its own discretion, in support of its mission and programs."
