UTAG members Monica Jackson, Caroljean Lacy and founder Marcia Jones-Washington have been together since 2005. Jones-Washington had grown weary of the redundancy of Black History Month being focused year after year on the "usual suspects" such as Harriett Tubman and Sojouner Truth.
"I just really believed that there are others in our history who had made contributions to our rich culture, whose names we never heard about," said Jones-Washington.
