WAYNE TWP., Warren County -- Thirty years later, Steve Lee still remembers spotting his first northern shrike during a Christmas Bird Count at a nature center in Michigan.

"That was a life bird, a bird I'd never seen before," said Lee, now regional manager in the Miami Valley for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
