En diciembre de 2020, la Fedral Trade Commission (FTC) demandó a Meta y la acusó de mantener ilegalmente un monopolio en las redes sociales, escenario en el que la adquisición de Instagram y WhatsApp, habrían sido un factor clave.
Según CeCo la FTC sostuvo que Meta había aplicado la estrategia conocida como «buy or bury» que consistía en comprar o sofocar a emprendimientos rivales antes de que se conviertan en una amenaza. Salió a relucir un mensaje de Zuckerberg en donde afirmaba que: «es mejor comprar que competir», lo que reflejaba una cultura empresarial enfocada en neutralizar de manera temprana la competencia.
